This has been the Coup de grâce of final projects for me. It was a beautiful struggle that I encountered. To be honest i can barely put the process of the project into words, but I’ll try.
The project was either create a tabloid or a children’s book, and I jumped at the opportunity to create a kids book. I’ve never thought about it before but when the opportunity came up I was ecstatic.
A quick synopsis:
the story is mainly about a young boy by the name of Harold, its his first day of school in a new town and goes on quite the adventure to realize what it takes to overcome things in life.
Initially I thought I was gonna be able to complete the whole book in the time frame
I guess I was a little too optimistic.
Im also into animation so this was a good rough draft into figuring out what aspect of animation, if I wanted to enter, i would be good at. (everything besides the actual animating)
Including everything from the script, characters, storyboards, text layout, etc.
The be honest it was quite exciting. I was stressed the whole month but I was excited and happy every time I finished more and more of the book.
I finished the script first, utilizing a rhyming style throughout the entire book (wouldn’t suggest it to those faint of heart)
It took me a while to finish the script, and simultaneously I finished some character designs for the book.
I have a lot of notes along my sketchbook for the book and a lot of reference pictures on my usb of things I wanted my story to be somewhat similar to but with my feel throughout it.
And after I finished the script I would then template it on some paper to do a rough layout of how I wanted the text to be laid out in terms of text/ phrase per page.
After that the professor informed me I would only have to do about 6-10 pages in the Book, and that relieved my stress by SO much.
Id have to say getting the script done was the hardest part, and even so all of the book is still in its rough stages. Characters, layouts, etc. but the whole process made me a little familiar with Illustrator mostly. Which was awesome because I’ve been trying to get better with illustrations in the program. And towards the end of the semester my professor showed me the power of InDesign and text. And the power of Text placement in a story which I’d have to say was eye opening. Im most likely going to be working on this project throughout the year and I’m really excited. Its even made me decide to invest in the adobe subscription just so i can utilize the programs at my leisure!
I want to get a little better with text in InDesign because after the professor assisted me with the first page I saw the difference between that text and the next page text. Including text color, text placement, spacing, and tools in InDesign that can assist in making the process easier. All i can say is this project is going to be awesome and with it Im gonna learn a lot with the adobe programs because I think having a project that you’re invested in along with tools to create it allows a person to excel at both and i can’t wait for what the future holds!
