For the final 3-D project I decided to make a somewhat abstract sculpture utilizing wire and origami birds.
The birds came from an idea from my children’s book I’m also working on in Graphic Design Skills.
In the story, the main character encounters Flurps (origami Birds) flying through the land and i decided to link the two classes.
I went through a lot of troubleshooting for this project and even after all I’d still say this is a prototype, because I’ve realized you can always improve on things throughout a piece. And even if you think it is an improvement, you won’t know until you actually try.
I had a lot of ideas coming into the project but i had to dwindle down the list, mainly due to time.
Initially I wanted to make a sculpture out of wood, mainly because I’m interested in art and was also interested with how sculptures were being made when i looked at periods in time. Especially with marble! But seeing as i was gonna have no where near a close amount of time for marble I thought wood would be better.
And after I realized I wasn’t going to have time for that I decided to try a windmill made from tooth picks with an actual spinning fan. I got the idea from the class as we were playing musical chairs with discussions on our projects.
it was eye opening and refreshing to be able to get outside sources of knowledge that would help me.
one of the students mentioned origami birds and I guess the idea must have stuck out to me and found its way into my book and into the 3-D sculpture.
The hardest part about this, Id have to say, was constructing the origami birds. It really does take patience to create and i learned that through the process.
After that everything else went pretty smoothly.
I unraveled the wire hangers with pliers and moved them around over the plaque of wood trying to figure out a sculpture that stuck out to me.
I also made sure that i didn’t have multiple colors in a chunk section of the piece so the eye would move a little easier around the work and wouldn’t get stuck.
All in all I learned about prototyping and patience with this project.
